Creativity takes flight in STEAM classrooms

Fifth and sixth grade students have been deeply engaged in creative, hands-on STEAM learning this fall.

In 5th grade, students completed their first 3D printing project by designing personalized “mission patch magnets” inspired by NASA’s space missions. They explored symbolism, practiced TinkerCAD design, and connected their projects to their personal identities and goals. Students also investigated the science of heat and density through a “Moving Matter Lava Lamp” art project, blending watercolor techniques with lessons on particle movement and color theory.

“I have been so impressed this month by our students’ creativity and problem solving skills! Way to go, Eagles!” — Mrs. Hatesohl 🦅

In 6th grade, learning combined science, art, and engineering. Students tested solar ovens to observe heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation. They then explored artistic expression through Tim Burton–inspired sketches and created 3D-printed Egyptian Cartouches to complement their social studies unit on Ancient Egypt. The upcoming Battle Bot Project will challenge students to design, build, and code their own robots in collaborative teams.

“We’re off to a fantastic start, and I can’t wait to see the amazing ideas our STEAM students bring to life next!” — Mrs. Kempf 🦅
